From a cinematic perspective this film could have been so much more. A good cast of characters somewhat makes up for an inconsistent and hard to follow movie. Scenes are often cut short giving you that TV commercial coming soon feeling. Penelope Cruz does a decent job in her portrayal of a Cuban woman. It was the highlight of the movie for me.
From a political standpoint it was hard for me to finish watching this movie for several reasons. Although based on true events but not accurate ones. The opening lines immediately blame the US for its embargo on the island. For those of you not familiar with Cuban history, Cuba is the way it is today because of a dictatorship that has plagued the island now for over 60 years. I blame communism, the Castro Regime and not an embargo. Please don’t be fooled.
The turning point point of the film for me started as soon as I started noticing the portrayal of the organization known as Brothers to the Rescue (Hermanos Al Rescate) led by Jose Balsuto. It’s portrayal in the film is inconsistent suggesting false activities on their behalf. They were known for lending humanitarian aide for Cuban rafters lost at sea and often breaching Cuban airspace to drop leaflets of hope for the people of Cuba but not other activities as suggested in the film.
A very difficult scene for me to watch was the shooting down of the Brother to the Rescue unarmed Cessna Skymaster planes by a Cuban Air Force Russian MiG 29UB ordered by none other than the Castro’s. This incident was condemned internationally and by the UN Council also not mentioned in the film. Indeed a very difficult scene for me to watch as one of those killed
was a good high school friend of mine, Mario De La Peña.
The film proceeds and makes you want to feel sorry for the role played by Penelope Cruz. Total nonsense and mockery to the Cuban exile community. There is a reason thousands have risked their lives at sea with hopes of a better life in the US.
Not mentioned in the credits at the end of the movie are those members of Brothers to the Rescue that lost their lives on the 24th of February 1996. In their honor here are their names;
Mario De La Peña, Carlos Costa, Armando Alejandre, Jr., and Pablo Morales.
