Poster design concept
Thanks to Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, pop art is back in 2024. This style uniquely emphasizes clichéd symbols of popular culture with modern elements like circles, pops of color, irony, and vision how to deposit money from draftkings to bank account. It was regularly seen in fashion magazines and comic books to fine art.
While perceived through a modern lens, artists, companies, and audiences are embracing the retro graphic design style with open arms. Even the world’s biggest brands, such as Nike, Pepsi, and even the fashion powerhouse Gucci, have integrated retro designs into their marketing, packaging, and advertising campaigns. Needless to say, the retro design theme will unquestionably top the modern graphic design trends in 2024.
The 60s brought the idea of using vivid colors in artwork. The artists ditched muted earthly palettes and started integrating bright colors as a sign of rebellion. The use of color was a sign to break free from the old traditions and create a whole new style.
4. Social Media & Instagram Graphics Retro-inspired filters, grainy textures, and neon typography are trending on social media platforms. These nostalgic elements help brands stand out in a crowded digital space. Animated VHS effects, glitch aesthetics, and classic 8-bit graphics are being used to enhance the vintage appeal of digital content. Many brands are also experimenting with Polaroid-style layouts and retro-inspired stickers to add a touch of nostalgia to their posts.
Would you be interested if I told you I had a time machine to let you travel back in time? Well, as of today, it’s not possible. But you can live as if it’s vintage when seeing such visuals. Here are the four ways in which retro design matters.
Cinematic artwork
Certain elements prepare us for the spiritual, otherworldly phenomena that will shortly arise. One of them is Maureen’s quick page-turning of an exhibition catalogue, dedicated to the works of Hilma af Klint. Although this may not appear directly related at first, Klint’s art in movies is more than a mere prop in this scene. Eerily ahead of her time, the artist anticipated abstractionism and engaged with other, more spiritual forms of representation. In other words, she sets the stage for the ghosts we’ll come to meet and the mysticism that continuously guides the narrative of the film.
The Pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais had already depicted a similar scene in his work “Ophelia” (1851-1852). Ophelia, an iconic character from Shakespeare’s tragedy “Hamlet,” peacefully floats on the water, giving rise to a moment that is both gentle and mortuary. Surrounded by lilies, Justine (like Ophelia) already appears distant—has she already departed this world?

Wes Anderson’s films are heavy on visual stimulation, often referring to paintings to enrich his frames. Anderson relies immensely on planimetric composition, tight symmetry, center-framing, and flatness, which attributes a two-dimensional quality to his films. This, along with the non-realistic presentation and chapter-like division of his narratives, make the viewer feel as if they are not watching a film but reading a heavily illustrated novel.
By utilizing these resources, you can deepen your understanding of how cinematic techniques enrich painting and appreciate the innovative works that emerge from this interdisciplinary approach. The ongoing dialogue between film and painting continues to inspire and challenge artists, pushing the boundaries of what visual art can achieve.
